Bourn & Koch Purchases Fellows Manufacturing Assets
Bourn & Koch Inc. of Rockford, IL and Star-SU, Inc. of Hoffman Estates, IL announced the acquisition of the gear shaper machine tool manufacturing assets and the gear shaper cutting tool manufacturing assets of Fellows Corporation, a member of the Goldman Vermont Group, Springfield, VT.
- History of Fellows: In 1889, Edwin R. Fellows, at the urging of James Hartness, became an employee of Jones & Lamson. In a short time this mechanical genius had invented a revolutionary new machine called a gear shaper. With the encouragement and financial backing of Hartness, Fellows Gear Shaper was founded in 1896. In 1903, Fellows adapted its gear shaper for the cutting of helical gears to meet the growing demands of the auto industry. While the 1920's were a time of growth and product development, the early 1940's saw the design and production of nine new kinds of machines. In 1947, Fellows unveiled a mammoth rotary gear shaper, and in 1977 introduced its new series of Hydrostroke machines - the only machines of their type on the market - and in the early 1980's CNC machines were introduced.
- History of Jones & Lamson: Jones & Lamson was founded in 1829 as the National Hydraulic Co. in Windsor, Vt. Going through a series of name changes, it finally became Jones & Lamson and moved to Springfield in 1888. Under the leadership of James Hartness, the company grew and prospered and became internationally renowned for its precision engine and turret lathes. The turret lathe was invented by Hartness in 1888. Amoung the many Jones & Lamson inventions was the world's first NC turret lathe, introduced in 1954. In 1970 the company introduced the first NC lathe to use rotating tools, which gave it broad machining capabilities. That same year they also introduced the world's first NC cylinrical grinder.
