They arrive, like the machine at the left, at Bourn & Koch, tired and worn out, with parts missing, gear transmissions stripped, stroke mechanisms frozen in place, incapable of shaping a gear to any class of accuracy. Fifty years ago, when they were new they made good gears, large externals and internals, with reasonable productivity. The old 36-6's required the operator to calculate a set of change gears, install a guide if the gear was helical, set the feed rate, select the stroking rate through the stroke transmission gears, set the stroke length and stroke position and set the number of cuts.
After a complete tear down to the raw casting the machines are given a new life at Bourn & Koch. The change gear transmission, feed gear, and stroking transmissions are eliminated, the worktable locked in place with a new backoff system at the cutter spindle, the worm and wormgear are replaced/reworked, and new direct drive servos are added to the machine and married to a GE Fanuc Powermate control. The Fellows 36-6's leave Bourn & Koch capable of producing gears to the OEM standard of accuracy when originally new, but about twice as productive due to the ability to change feeds and speeds on multiple cuts.
Bourn & Koch will CNC remanufacture your machine or they will provide the carcass. The basic remanufacture is relatively inexpensive for a 36" sized gear shaper in today's market. Options for increasing the stroke length and swing diameter (throated rise block), or for quick return stroking, or for increased under the cutter height are available at additional cost.
