Bourn & Koch developed the HDS series of dual linear gear shapers to revolutionize the way herringbone gears are generated. Based on the time tested principles of manual herringbone gear generators, the HDS series cuts cycle times drastically. The HDS is a compact machine tool with 9 axes of CNC control and fast linear motor stroking. Herringbone gears or double helical gears are utilized for power transmission in many heavy industrial applications, from gearboxes to industrial equipment.
Typically, large herringbone gears can take upwards of 60 hours to produce on manual herringbone gear generators. The HDS machine can produce even large gears in roughly half the cycle time of these older machines. While 5-axis milling machines can be used to generate herringbone and double helical gears, they cannot produce the mating pinion without special fixturing and workholding. The Bourn & Koch HDS series of machines can also produce the mating pinion for these gears.
The HDS features our trademarked Orient-Stiffness Backoff, keeping the machine rigid and accurate throughout the shaping process. Tool wear mapping is displayed through the CNC, allowing for optimization of tool life and reduction of downtime due to cutter failure.
